You may not think about your neck until you suddenly feel some discomfort in that area. The neck is where the spinal cord and column begin. It supports your head, and through arteries, helps blood move to your brain and heart. Your neck, therefore, is an important part of your body, and like the rest of your body parts, should be helped, as necessary, so that it operates optimally. If you are experiencing discomfort, professionals in correcting neck pain for Chicago residents can help.

Here are three neck pain facts.

What Causes Neck Pain?

The most common causes of neck pain are poor posture, bad sleeping position and repetitive motions. The nerves in that area can pinch, you may experience soreness or it may feel like it locks when you attempt to shift from one side to another. Athletes may experience neck pain after an injury while pain in this area may be a result of arthritis for those who are older. If you were recently in a car accident, as the driver or passenger, neck pain is a common result days later.

When to See a Professional

If you are suddenly experiencing neck pain, check your posture and change your sleeping position. After making adjustments, if you are still feeling discomfort, but were not recently involved in an accident or athletic event, consider visiting a chiropractor. When neck pain is severe, it may be best to visit your doctor, however. This is especially true if you were involved in an accident.

Treatment

The type of treatment necessary will depend upon the severity of the pain and how it resulted. For some, a chiropractic adjustment may suffice. For others, pain medication or surgery may be required.
