What can a patient expect from an oculoplastic surgeon in Jacksonville, FL?

Oculoplastics is plastic surgery done around the eyes. An oculoplastic surgeon may work on the eyelids, orbits or eye sockets, eyebrows, cheeks, and lacrimal or tear system. Oculoplastic surgery can be reconstructive, cosmetic, or both.

Examples of procedures that an oculoplastic surgery might perform include the following:

• Blepharoplasty
• Ptosis repair
• Tumor excision
• Surgery on clogged or abnormal tear ducts
• Brow lifts

What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as an “eye lift” is a cosmetic surgical procedure done to remove excess fat and skin from the eyelids. It can be done on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. If the surgeon works on both eyelids, they will typically work on the upper eyelids first.

Blepharoplasty can be done on its own or along with another procedure such as a brow lift. Blepharoplasty can sometimes be medically necessary. In some cases, the patient will have a lot of drooping skin that sags over their eyelid and obscures their vision. Medical insurance may cover blepharoplasty that is done to correct this problem.

What is Graves’ disease?
Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder that can affect the orbits, thyroid gland, and the skin around the shin. It can cause such symptoms as exophthalmos (bulging eyes), double vision, and retraction of the eyelids. In rare cases, it can also cause vision loss. Surgical treatments for Graves’ disease can include strabismus surgery, eyelid retraction repair, and orbital decompression.

In orbital decompression, the surgeon will remove fat and bone in the orbits to make more space in the orbits so the patient’s eyes will return to a more normal position. The doctor will administer general anesthesia.

In eyelid retraction, the patient’s eyelids have pulled too far away from the eyeball. The surgeon may use any of several different techniques to correct the retraction depending on its severity.
